Patrick Klepek Will Now Take Your Calls

Anonymous asked: Which one do you enjoy more, indie low budget horror or big blockbuster franchised horror?

The former, always.

novolin asked: I want to start watching horror movies, but I'm a big baby. What is a good place to start? I'm not too big on jump scares, but a few are ok!

Evil Dead.

Anonymous asked: Any time E3 draws near, you get certain game journalists who just complain about it. I know staying up late and playing viddygamez is hard work but are we really supposed to feel sorry for them in this situation? I know you personally don't moan about it, but Jesus Christ ask literally anybody in the middle of a shift of a real job and I'm sure they'd trade places.

It’s hard work, but I know what you mean. I try not to complain about my job—it’s an amazing opportunity. Even great jobs have bad days, though.

Anonymous asked: So what's even the point of buying current gen games now? When apparently nothing game related is carrying over (with the exception of ps4, but that's a big if) makes me kind of think that those games that are coming out from here till the next systems will suffer greatly.

Wait until they drop in price.

Anonymous asked: Who are some writers outside of video game journalism you admire or who's writing you respect?

Ezra Klein is probably my favorite writer/reporter in politics. John Dickerson is a close second. Writer writers? Stephen King, Clive Barker, Tom Bissell…I tend to read by topic, not author.

Anonymous asked: I really needed Imscared on Unprofessional Fridays after last night, but seeing it like that really highlights why I don't enjoy most horror games; there's not much to engage with in them besides the spooks. In more traditional survival-horror games, I have the resource management metagame to motivate me to continue, but with the exception of the Tag portion, Imscared is just "find x, get spooked," which seems almost like cheating to me. Is that being unfair?

The scares are the draw, and the systems of horror games play into heightening that tension. Without that, you’re right that there’s not much to many horror games, but, again, that’d be missing the point.

Anonymous asked: Was watching TNT and seeing you guys discuss shows like Heroes, I wanted to heard your opinion on American Horror Story, if you have one. I've only seen the first season so far, and while I didn't think it became a bad show, it did start to fall off towards the end there, enough so that I don't have that much motivation to continue watching it. I do plan to get back to it though, the fact that the storyline between the seasons are not entirely connected helps in that regard.

It’s OK. The twist at the end of the first season was great, but the second season was a disaster. If you can’t even grabĀ me with aliens, what are you doing?

cianoc asked: Given the option do you now give any female characters a sick ass goatee?

No, but that sounds pretty great.

luigi1928 asked: Hello there Patrick! Just wanted to say fuck all the haters, all of you are a bunch of pretty cool cats. I tuned in for the first time to your Spookin' with Scoops on the 24th, and I gotta say, I was really impressed with how intrigued I was, yet I play zero horror games. You mentioned later that you were using this as way for people to get into the horror genre, and I definitely felt that way so I might try Amnesia pretty soon since it's been sitting in my Steam library. Keep up the great work!

Good luck, my friend. Amnesia is no small feat.

pepsimangb asked: Since you recommended Mr. Rescue in this week's Worth Reading, I figure you might be interested in trying out a SNES game called The Firemen sometime, since it's another rare game with firefighting as a central mechanic. It also has you rescuing people from burning buildings, but actual combat against fire is also important since you have different water nozzles for handling different types of fire. It only came out in English in Europe, but I doubt the SFC version's Japanese is too dense.

Shit, sounds pretty cool. Thanks.

Anonymous asked: Hey Patrick, love what you're doing with Spookin' With Scoops. I wanted to recommend some horror games I found enjoyable, don't know if they will be up your alley or not, but I think you should give them a shot. White Day is a Korean first person survival horror game set inside a locked school and Ao Oni is a Japanese indie game made using RPG Maker. For White Day just google "White Day Unnamed Studios." As for Ao Oni, just google "games 888 Ao Oni."

Thanks. :)

Anonymous asked: In your last questions video, I noticed quite a few Stephen King books on your shelf. Have you read most of King's writing? What do you think of him as a writer overall? What would you say your favorite non-Dark Tower book of his would be?

King’s fantastic, even if he can’t write a decent ending that’s not part of a short story. The Dark Tower is absolutely my favorite, with The Stand being a close second.

Anonymous asked: Content idea for once you're back in Chicago, or even before: daily/weekly Animal Crossing: New Leaf vlogs. I feel like I've just convinced you not to do it with the word "vlogs", but still. Tom Nook compels you!

That sounds pretty good. Too bad I won’t be able to capture 3DS stuff.

Anonymous asked: I've only been to Chicago twice, and they're where both years ago. As a native, do you have any places to recommend seeing? I've been to the museums, but I'm looking for a less touristy kind of thing. Are there any particular bars to check out perhaps?

Not really, honestly! I moved to San Francisco right after college wrapped up, and never spent much time in Chicago. I grew up in the suburbs, so my Chicago experience is limited to driving into the city to do a specific thing, then leaving. Ask me in six months. :)

Anonymous asked: so you're saying you wont be on unprofessional fridays?, with that cross stream tech you guys were messing with, cant you just appear on there like that? or does stream delay kind of kill that idea?

I suspect I’ll make some guest appearances, but part of what makes Giant Bomb work is the dynamic of people in the same room together.
